Inner Peace for the Holidays

There is an assumption that holidays are full of happiness and loving connection with family and friends. Advertisers promote Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, gifts and events that promise joy and excitement. But such promises often don’t match our real experiences.

Holidays can be filled with loneliness, scarcity and overwhelm. Even if you have family to share holidays with, there can be the stress of gift purchases, making meals and hosting get-togethers. There can be reactivity to family members who may make hurtful remarks or abuse substances to cope with their holiday distress. Further, the very lack of happiness during the holidays can result in sadness and confusion about one’s own worthiness to have the happiness everyone else appears to enjoy.
